This year, 2003, marks the hundred-year anniversay of George Orwell's birth.
The Socialist BlairIn a nutshell, the situation leading to the publication of Christopher Hitchens's Why Orwell Matters, which is in part a defense of Orwell's behavior. The book by Hitchens has spawned a recent and somewhat surprising--to me, at least--battle between public intellectuals: Louis Menand and Leon Wieseltier duking it out in print over the meaning of Orwell's literary and political legacy. I find it extremely refreshing that people seem to care as much as they do.
